Edibles, Delivery, Delta 8 THC, Gummies, Reviews

These Delta 8 THC gummies offer a maximum Delta 8 THC experience, if that's already your thing. If not, look elsewhere.

Like many cannabis users (I suspect), I’m bad at following orders.

So when I read on the website that these gummies are “for experienced Delta 8 THC users only”, I didn’t follow instructions and tried out these green apple 50mg Delta 8 THC gummies anyway.

Maybe that’s why I found these gummies hard to love?

Green Apple Delta 8 THC: First Impressions

Let’s start with first impressions. On the packaging the first thing I notice is the “MAX” designation atop the green resealable bag – another indicator that the 50mg dose is not to be trifled with. The bag is inviting, green and graphic, with a photo of a cut apple there near the bottom hinting at the flavor. In the upper-left the bag tells us that Cannabis Life is “a Green Roads company.” Green Roads is a company I’ve personally put stock in for a while now – and I would say that if any company out there knows how to formulate for “MAX” effect, it’s these guys.

So as I’m opening this bag, I’m trusting, I’m hopeful, I’m excited!

The 50mg Delta 8 THC Experience

The serving size of these gummies is 50mg of Delta 8 THC per gummy. That’s a lot of THC! In the last product I reviewed, we were talking about a 5mg THC dose per gummy. What gives?

The reason, of course, is that this is Delta 8 THC, and the last product was Delta 9 THC. Delta 8 THC is generally considered to have a less potent psychoactive effect than Delta 9 THC. Delta 9 THC occurs much more readily in the cannabis plant, whereas Delta 8 generally exists in much smaller amounts in the plant. So, if producers want to make an intoxicating Delta 8 THC gummy, a higher dose of Delta 8 THC is usually called for. Whereas the 2018 Farm Bill specifically regulated the amount of Delta 9 THC in a product (less than 0.3%), Delta 8 THC is not specifically regulated – so producers can really go for “MAX” with these products.

My Delta 8 THC high kicked in within 30 minutes. Straight away, this high felt different than most THC highs I’m used to.

Specifically, I started off with a headache! It was a THC-induced kind of headache I’ve had before … maybe when I’ve already had too much THC in a day, or maybe something akin to smoking resin. Not the greatest way to begin.

My headache did give way though, and in the middle of this edible THC high, this was the experience I am used to. I think I’d described it as a little bit more of a body high than a cerebral one; if left to my own devices, I likely would have spent a lot of this time laid out on the couch.

The high was quite long-lasting – seven hours after taking my single gummy, I was still very much feeling its effects, and enjoying them. The 50mg high did feel a bit overwhelming early-on, though it evened out for me. If I was going to try this product again, I’d likely opt to cut these in half and see where it gets me.

Toward then end, to my surprise, my headache-y feeling returned. This was dismaying, as I don’t know I’ve ever had the experience of a headache coming and going due to use. That headache returned, but I don’t think it lasted very long on the way out.

The taste of these gummies was quite yummy. Very chewy, a little bit bigger than most, and very apple indeed; sweet, and not much else to our flavor profile here. Which is actually a bit disappointing, if you ask me; I want the gummies to keep it as natural as possible and taste like actual cannabis. When all I taste is apple, I know the relevant cannabinoids have been isolated from the plant. With Delta 8 THC, I know that it has been chemically, synthetically derived from the plant’s CBD, not naturally extracted (again, Delta 8 doesn’t occur in high enough levels inside plants, to make it easy or profitable to naturally extract. Instead it is chemically synthesized from pure cannabidiol (CBD). This is a lab-created high, not particularly natural – and no “entourage effect” for your wellness.

So, flavor tells us lots. Even “yum” can be deceiving.

Delta 8: It’s Not For Me

From reading, research, and now some personal experience – I don’t think Delta 8 products will stay on my “to do” list very long. As an old hippie writer (in another life), I’m simply wary of chemically synthesized items entering my body. I’ve trusted naturally grown THC for so long, I have a problem thinking about solvents being used on cannabinoids to create my gummies.

Check out this quote over at from Russell Lombard, a CBD and Delta 8 THC wholesaler:

“The reality is, even if you start with a 99.9% CBD isolate, you don’t end up with a 99.9% delta-8 THC,” he noted. “Some people will claim that you do; some labs will test, telling you that you do. But if you look at the chromatogram, as a scientist, you can tell that you have a lot of other stuff going on in that reaction.”

So, there’s a Delta 8 seller and scientist, telling us that even if the lab reports are looking good, it’s simply hard to trust the science behind Delta 8 synthesis. Unless you’re going to read the actual chromatogram and have a degree in doing so…you may well be consuming a hodge-podge of uncertain byproducts of the chemical reaction which turns CBD into Delta 8 THC.

What’s more, very good hemp-derived Delta 9 THC products are available in 2023. It’s hard for me to suggest sticking with Delta 8 THC products when safely-extracted Delta 9 is out there.

The Final Word

Maybe I should have just listened to the Cannabis Life website and packaging when they told me this product is for experienced Delta 8 THC users, after all. If you’ve been using Delta 8 THC for a while, and that works for you – you may very much enjoy these green apple gummies. These are not for inexperienced users – but with Delta 9 THC on the market and the less-than-thrilling backstory to Delta 8 THC, I wonder if there should be a such thing as an experienced Delta 8 THC user at all.
